Weekly Update – 26/2/12

Highlights from my life this week…

I finally got my car back from being repaired. It was a whole month waiting for it to go in for repairs and a week without my wheels, but she looks good as new now….

Highlights from our homeschooling this week…

We learnt about Van Gogh. The children are enjoying our art lessons. Especially when they get to learn about the greatest artists. They enjoy comparing art work from the different periods and artists themselves. Van Gogh is definitely a favourite….

Our favorite thing this week was…

Nik enjoyed her dancing lesson. Phinee the ability to go no where ( as we had no wheels) and me the time spent with Family.

Things I’m working on…

STILL- The next edition of Glimpse – a FREE Online homeschooling newsletter – which is due out in February. – A little late I know but it is still coming ….. I wish I could find someone able to help me out with this venture …..

I’m reading…

Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children from Nature-deficit Disorder by Richard Louv.

This is an amazing book and a real eye opener. It talks about what Richard calls ‘Nature Deficit Disorder’ – which he explains that our children are experiencing – it’s a term, not an illness – I had to buy this book to read and also to keep on  my bookshelf – Well worth a read!

We continued our study of the United Kingdom. Focused on our regular areas of Literacy and Numeracy. Started work on Tata’s Birthday present for his 40th. Took a trip down memory lane through photographs, memorabilia and stories.
The children all followed the journey of their own ‘convict’ as they ventured around Port Arthur. Our learning about these convicts will continue into the coming week.

Our favorite thing this week was…

Our Family day out at port Arthur to celebrate Australia Day. Amongst so many wonderful things we enjoyed that day we watched a history play at Port Arthur called ‘The Shingle Strike’.

Weekly Update – 22/1/12

In my life this week…

I have continued to Visit the Doctor. Finally they have things under control, even though they are still not sure why I have the issues I have or what is causing them. The idea is now to see how the medication works for me and what happens when they ween me off it in around another three weeks time. Hopefully it will have fixed the issues….

In our homeschool this week…

The girls have worked hard on their English and Maths. Nik has worked well with the letter ‘W’ again this week. She has also put a lot of effort into learning to read, write and spell her spelling words. She was very pleased to be able to read the words out to Tata at our last family meeting.

Phinee has been working hard on her times tables. It seems that repetitive writing of the times tables is helping her to remember them easier. Which is great news. She has also been doing great with her spelling words. We did have to talk through the old – ‘i’ before ‘e’ except after ‘c’ rule, but otherwise she got almost full marks for all the other words we gave her (45 in total) for the week.

The girls did dome chalk dust drawings for Art. They had to make their own chalk dust and then use it to create a universe. They also started learning about Picasso. They found his art works quick dramatically different, depending on what time frame they were created as well as downright strange at times. Our work on Picasso will continue over the next few weeks.

Both girls enjoyed being able to share their work with Tata this week during our Family meeting. They showed off their art work and literacy and numeracy work amongst other things to Tata who was ‘most impressed’.

We also enjoyed no Electricity day. It did not turn out quite as Planned as We had commitments that took us out of home, so we did use Electricity when outside the home. However once we returned we successfully did not use any electricity. – We are now looking forward to our next No Electricity Day, and intend to stay home for all of it, to really make a difference and impact on our learning.

Places we have been and people we have seen…Phinee attended another SMC Youth Group excursion. This time she went to Tolosa Park in Glenorchy to learn how to draw with a cartoonist and also to the Glenorchy pool for the afternoon. She thoroughly enjoyed this.

We also visited our friends in Austins Ferry again this week, which was a lot of fun, otherwise we just spent time at home with each other and the animals.

My favorite thing this week was…

Our Family meeting. It was very productive, informative but most of all engaging and fun!

Weely Update 14/1/2012

In my life this week…

This week has been a very busy one. I took my nephew to the airport, after he decided to return back to Adelaide after living with us for around 5 months. I also had some medical tests done, and Friday the 13th lived up to it’s reputation with my car getting smashed by a reversing driver – Now I have to get it fixed…

In our homeschool this week…

Phinee finally managed to get her pen license this week before our homeschooling 2012 journey started, so she is now able to use pens when doing her learning and she loves it.

The girls worked hard on all tasks they were given. We spent the week concentrating on teaching Nik how to read. This is our greatest goal with Nik this year is to get her reading. She is extremely clever, but a little lazy when it comes to her desire to read, so 2012 we are concentrating on her reading skills, so that once learnt, she can unlock a huge area of potential for herself.

With Phinee we spent much of the week reviewing Maths and different concepts, to ensure she is retaining what she has learnt. She is quite good at maths, but needs a little more confidence when dealing with it.

Places we have been and people we have seen…

We visited our friends in Austins Ferry, Our friends in Old Beach as well as enjoyed time at home just the four of us.

My favorite thing this week was…

Enjoying a BBQ at Old Beach with friends

Weekly Update – 28/10/2011

In my life this week…

Family, extra work and learning. Our Baby turned 6, so she is definitely not a baby anymore, but rather a grown up little girl. We enjoyed sharing her special day with her amongst family and a witch cake! – So appropriate too, with Halloween just around the corner.

In our homeschool this week…

The children have been growing veggies from seedlings, managing the veggie garden and continuing their learning about Animals. Nik enjoyed her birthday by being in charge for the day, something that happens around here on your special occasion.

Places we have been and people we have seen…

We have stayed home for the most part, not venturing out anywhere this week. DJ, Nan and Graeme where all here for Nik’s Birthday celebration and a fun time was had by all.
