A casual day at home

Well today started out quite good. The girls and I went down to the local park next to the football oval. I walked all the way while they rode their bikes. We had intended on spending some time there, but as the sky kept growing darker and the clouds appeared heavier we decided that we would make it a quick stop. Phinee decided that she would get me to time her as she raced around the oval on her bike. She wants to see if she can make it around faster each time she attempts the ride. Today the lap around the oval took 2 minutes and 16 seconds – a great effort on her behalf. Only time will tell if she can make it faster or not. Let’s hope she can!

After lunch we had a visit from some friends of ours. They are over from the mainland for 10 days. It is great to see them and to be able to sit and enjoy a chat. They stayed for Dinner and we all enjoyed ourselves. The girls very much enjoyed practicing Netball, playing little pet shops and grabbing some attention from our visitors.

A good day was had by all :)

Christmas is well and truly here!

Well today as tradition has it, we put the Christmas tree up and most of our Christmas decorations.

We decided to put it all outside in the pergola as there is much more room out there to dress up and it is where we are hoping to spend much of our Christmas time and festivities and celebrations. The girls had a lot of fun with it all and even though there is more left for us to decorate we have made a great effort so far and the tree looks fantastic.

Our next task is to write a Christmas letter to enclose in our Christmas cards to everyone :) as we need to get them posted off ASAP!

Glimpse – Global Learners In Many Places Sharing Experiences

Well I have been very busy… and as a result I have a new project underway. Over the last little while I have been busy working to establish a small group of individuals in order to create an online publication / newsletter dedicated to sharing learning around the globe.

I have been very fortunate in being able to get this off the ground and currently there is a wonderful group of us individuals working on the first edition. We live in the USA, New Zealand, Canada and Australia.

We have decided to call this publication ‘GLIMPSE – which stands for ‘Global Learners In Many Places Sharing Experiences’

This newsletter (which is fast turning into something more like a magazine type product) will have a theme each month that participants can join in by sending in articles related to the theme of the month. Each new issue will outline the theme for the following month. Articles will be written by individuals from a personal perspective and the hope is to showcase our children’s learning with other like minded home educators. However to be involved, people only have to have a love of learning, they do not have to specifically home educate, just be open and friendly to the idea.

There will be no advertising, no political content and no religious content either.

The first editions theme is ‘Introducing your family…’ and the deadline for articles for consideration is Monday the 26th of July 2010. The first edition will be available in PDF format and either sent in email or made available for download from this website. Anyone who is interested in learning more or joining in, please email info@golab.info for further details.

It is important to know that if you chose to join in, you acknowledge that the newsletter / publication will be created as a PDF file and will be emailed or downloaded from a website (if size too big) to other families around the world who say they are homeschooling. You must understand that anyone can potentially have access to any of the information you provide for inclusion into the newsletter. Therefore it is very important NOT to add any personal or real identifying details to your articles, etc. unless you want others anywhere in the world to know that information about you. Even keeping this in mind, we are sure we can all create a wonderful resource for us to learn and share from each other with!

We hope some of you may find this opportunity worth while. If you feel this may be of interest to others please direct them to this website rather than posting the info else where ! Thanks!

Golab Home Learning in 2010

With the new year fast approaching we have been busy trying to decide what we can use as our main ‘themes’ and activities for 2010. We have been looking for themes and activities that will allow us the freedom to branch out if we choose, but still remain within our original idea as required.

Thankfully after weeks and weeks of discussion, deliberation, frustration and excitement we have finally cemented  what our  themes and activities will be for our home learning in 2010.

We are starting out with a few new projects that will no doubt continue right through the year and beyond..

Our themes and activities for 2010 are:

  • The World!. This is a great opportunity for us to look not only at countries, but traditions, places, people, food, animals and so so much more! We are going to be using a number of different activities to learn about the world we live in.
  • Human Body - This will allow us to explore how the body works, why it sometimes doesn’t and also all about Puberty. We can also explore things such as how the senses work, heights and weights, nutrition, exercise, speech and languages, plus things such as auslan and braille where the hands are used to communicate.
  • Postcard Swapping - This involves us randomly sending a postcard to some one in the world, and for another person to randomly send us a postcard from where they live. This is done with ease, via a website called postcrossing. We will then research the country, landscape, building, item etc depicted on the postcard to learn more about it.
  • Penpal Letter Writing - We will be developing penpal relationships that allow us not only to learn about other people and the world around us. This will help the children improve their English written skills & communication with others – but most of all it should also be a lot of fun for them!

2010 will also bring with it the usual English, maths, science, history, geography, socialisation, sports, art, craft and a million other learning opportunities about for us.

JAHG will be continuing to work on her ‘Junior BP Award’ at Girl Guides as well as other badge work, before progressing onto her BP Award and other achievements.
