Anaphylaxis and Asthma First Aid Course plus more!

Well today I had to go to a first aid course for work to learn about Anaphylaxis and asthma treatment in a first aid situation. The course was quite interesting and we got to use a trial EpiPEN as part of the course, so we could work out just how to deliver the EpiPEN if needed. We also road tested placebo Asthma inhalers so that we could work out how to also administer this medication.

After the course was over I returned home and then SZG and I took the children out to the shops to see if we could find any interesting magazine and reading material for our long trip on the Spirit of Tasmania on Monday. We are going across Bass Strait on a day sail, so need plenty of things to keep us occupied. Thankfully we will have a cabin to use so we can have a little privacy and some space away from the big crowds of people who take advantage of the great savings a Day Sail ticket offers you in price compared to a night sailing.

We are all looking forward to this time away. It is hard to believe that it will be our first trip back to the mainland since we moved over to Tassie in April 2008. Wow how times flies when you are having fun!

Our Tomatoes are finally Growing!

JAHG and her Tomato Plant

JAHG and her Tomato Plant

Well our tomato plant is finally starting to grow tomatoes! I can’t believe just how long it has taken for us to see some kind of fruit on this plant. The girls have lovingly kept watering the tomato plant and the other herbs, but they have not really done to well. Some of the herbs have turned for the worst and our lettuces actually became a joke … with us calling them ‘Dead lettuce’ as they just did not seem to grow or thrive!

We are very excited however to have some tomatoes starting to take shape on this plant! Let’s just hope they actually get bigger and change to the red colour we desire without to many issues!

Clay Making and putting the finishing touches on a Mask

Today the Girls did some clay modeling. They had a lot of fun creating shapes, animals and people out of the clay. We talked about the texture of the clay and its ability to be moulded into any shape we desired. We also compared the clays residue look and feel to that of foundation and talked about things that are made from Clay. The children enjoyed this activity very much, so I took the time to talk with a local Artist who teaches pottery, to see if we can arrange for the children to have some lessons from her. So watch this space we we are hoping to do pottery classes this first half of the year!

NIK also spent time today finishing off her mask that she had started earlier in the week. The end result was quite interesting and the mask look great on her!

Mad Scientist Day

Today we had a mad scientist day. We make a Volcano from paper and then used Bicarb to create the volcanic eruption. The experiment was a good success however the eruption was not as big as we first had hoped for. The children and I then discussed the experiment, outlining the reasons why the eruption may have occurred the way it did and why certain things (such as Citric Acid, Bicarb Soda and Vinegar) would react the way they did.

We also did a Milk Experiment called ‘Milk Planets’. The idea is to get a saucer of Milk and add drops of colouring into it, Then using an ear bud drop small of dish washing liquid into the milk. The colouring explodes and moves away from the dish washing liquid. This experiment shows the break down of the molecules in the milk when mixed with detergent. The children loved the swirling colours this created. We again discussed how the dish washing liquid separates the molecules and the science behind the experiment.

NIK’s Masterpiece – Two Bunnies Playing!

Drawing Bunnies

Drawing Bunnies

NIK has really taken a shine to being creative with pen and paper. Here she is drawing on a white board. She tells me her picture is of two bunnies. She is also expanding her knowledge and ability to write and recognise  letters of the alphabet. She can now form the letters N and T however her A looks more like a Q, but she is definitely making progress!

Finishing off her writing!
