Hobart Botanical Gardens in Bloom October 2009

Well we spent a day at the Botanical Gardens today. The children enjoy looking at all the brightly coloured plants and flowers and taking note of what is new for the different seasons every time we visit.

Here are some of the stunning plants and flowers we seen today!

Homemade Lemonade – Including Recipe

Well today as part of the children’s learning we did our usual chores followed by bookwork and cooking. However we decided to try our hand at making some homemade lemonade as a treat. This proved to be a great success and we enjoyed the experience immensely.

Here is the recipe

Homemade Lemonade

Ingredients

1  cup of caster sugar,

1 cup of lemon juice – freshly squeezed

3 cups of mineral water (you can use soda water if you choose as an alternative)

Method:

Place the caster sugar and water into a saucepan.

Stir over low heat until the sugar dissolves into the water.

Allow to cool slightly then stir in the cup of lemon juice and leave to cool completely.

Makes: 1.25 litres of Homemade Lemonade.

Once the sugar, water and lemon juice syrup is completely cooled place into a jug or drink bottle, add 3 cups of mineral water, and chill in refrigerator.

Once chilled serve in glasses garnished with ice cubes and strawberries if desired!

Note: The children found this drink to be a lot of fun to create and they enjoyed garnishing it also. However we found that the lemon flavour was quite strong, so feel free if you try this recipe to either decrease the amount of lemon juice you put in, or increase the amount of mineral water you use.

Annual Statewide Home Education Picnic – Ross Tasmania

Today we went to Ross for the Annual Statewide Home Education Picnic. The weather was a lot nicer than I originally thought it was going to be and the atmosphere was great!

The event was supported by THEAC and many of our council members where there for everyone to meet. The day officially ran from 10am to 2.30pm, however well after 3pm we still had large number of families enjoying themselves!  Which was great to see!

Our girls enjoyed the opportunity to meet other children from different parts of Tasmania and engaged in play easily with those around them, which was reassuring for us personally. Unfortunately SZG was unable to attend the picnic as he had work commitments, but I thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to meet and get to know some other home ed families and learn about their journeys and methods used for learning.

A great day out, which we are all keen to enjoy again next year!
