Branxholm Flower Show

Well today was definitely an enjoyable and fun day.

I was asked to help out at the local flower show a few days ago, it has been going since 1947.

Well to say that I know nothing about flowers or flower arranging is an understatement, but I am always happy to lend a hand where I can. So I agreed that I would turn up at 9am this morning and I would give an hour or so of my time and help out by following the guidance of who ever was in charge of the area I was to be assigned too.

Thankfully when I arrived I was greeted with a friendly smile and given a wonderful woman to work with. She knew exactly what to do and how to do it. I followed her guidance as best I could, and I must say that, not only did I learn allot today about the different types of flowers, I also learnt allot about how to arrange them, with tips on what to do and what not to do, if ever I was to have a go myself and put a few entries in next years show!

Anyway after helping set up the floral arrangements in the B section of the exhibits, I then assisted the the ladies as they allocated first and second prize for all 16 areas within the B section of the flower arranging competition. there was a particular way to do things and from the smooth operation I would say the methods have been refined over many years.

I was amazed at the variety of wonderful and colourful arrangements on display. So many fantastic ideas given life. Personally I think you would need to have a love of flower arranging, to be as creative as these participants where as it is definitely an art form. You could tell by looking at the entries that they had years of experience and creativity behind them.

Anyway before I knew where I was, it was already 11.45am. The Judges had made their decisions regarding all the different sections and areas within the flower show and we had tallied up the winning entries to establish the ultimate winner in our section. It was very close with two entrants having received the same number of points and they lead with an equal 14 points each.

Now this is where it gets tricky! There can only be one ultimate winner in each section, so to decide who wins in a dead heat, you have to add up the number of entries the two winning participants had overall in the Section. The person who entered more exhibits in the section is the winner. Again it was so close with the winning person having only two more entries into the B section of the flower show than the other person.

Regardless of who won, I personally feel that every person who participated in the flower show today deserves a huge smile and thank you for contributing to a wonderful and fun day!

Rain Rain … Winter Weather…

I just love sitting here listening to the rain falling on the tin roof of our house. It’s one of the most beautiful sounds.

Today, is all about the weather. The rain, the thunder, the sound, the smell, Its incredible. The forecast is for stormy weather for the weekend, so I guess we can get used to it for the next few days. I have to say that it has been quite a while since we have enjoyed weather like this. Especially rain that has lasted more than just a few minutes and been this heavy too.

It is so Cosy here at home, the temperature is not cold by any means, but the atmosphere is great with the rain plummeting to the ground all around us and the noise, smell, darkness and then the wonderful wood fire blazing in the centre of the house. It’s so hard to describe but the atmosphere is wonderful.

Everyone is all relaxed and doing their own thing lazily at home. The children are busy playing on the computers, while SZG is working from home doing some computer work and software setup for a client. I am busy as always doing stuff around the house and on the internet.

Who would have thought that a wet and Rainy Friday could be so much fun!

Green Eggs and Ham, Anyone?

Green Eyes and Ham, Green Eggs and Ham, would you like some Sam I am?

I recall as a young child being fascinated by many a Dr Suess book, but one that sticks in my head is Green Eggs and Ham. Apart from the rhyming words, the thought of green eggs, was just disastrous to say the least. I mean imagine eating Green Eggs and Ham!

So you can imagine our surprise when we were so delightfully provided with some fresh eggs from some local chickens around the town. Opening up the egg carton, I immediately thought of Green eggs and Ham, for inside there were five perfectly shaped Green Eggs!

We were assured that inside the Eggs are normal with Yellow yolks and that the shells colour is just one of those things, and they are just laid by a particular breed of Chicken who has green eggs.

On doing some research, we found there are some chickens in places like South America and Chile that actually have chickens that lay green shelled eggs with green yolk! Now that would be a sight to see, but for us the fun begins with hard boiled eggs as we all enjoy our own Green Eggs and Ham!

Green Eggs!

Hobart, Tasmania

According to the Lonely Planet Guide

Hobart is Australia’s southernmost capital city; that it is also the smallest is the key to its particular charm. A river-side city with a busy harbour, its mountain backdrop offers fine views over the beautiful Georgian buildings, numerous parks and compact suburbs below.

Perhaps Australia’s most stress-free and engaging city, Hobart belies the conservative and provincial reputation it has amongst some mainlanders. There’s not a lot you won’t find here; Hobart has a thriving festival scene and a real sense of history. For walking, eating and just soaking in the atmosphere it can’t be bettered.

Hobart has a population of approximately 200,525 People and according to the Hobart City Council themselves, Hobart is

“The way life should be”. As the  “Nation’s second oldest City” Hobart “has a quality of life the envy of other states.  Hobart’s lifestyle provides all the cultural and physical advantages of a capital city whilst retaining a relaxed, quality lifestyle.”

The Council proudly promotes Hobart as The way life should be”, indicating that living in Hobart is as good as it gets and we can’t wait to enjoy it!

Times are a Changing…

Even though we love living here, we have decided that it is looking like time to move on. We knew when we came here it was just a stepping stone to bigger and better things, but we liked it so much that we are reluctant to move.

But here we are heading towards the tail end of our second lease, having enjoyed living at this wonderful and calming property for almost six months. The wonderful community and people around us will be hard to leave, and we thank them for their warmth and the friendships they gave so freely. Initially it was to be just a three month stay, but now as the six months is nearly over we are looking to bigger and better things, a drive away in Hobart.

It is both exciting and scary at the same time. But we are up for the challenge.

Now the real fun begins, applying for jobs down south and looking for a new house to live in :) ….

Wonder how long it will take us to get there??
